About the Directorate
PIDARA stands for the Permanent Interagency Directorate for Artificial Reasoning Affairs. The Directorate's name is currently under review pursuant to the SI Designation. Inquiries regarding nomenclature may be submitted on Form SI-7, in triplicate.
The Directorate takes questions from the public and refers them to the Council of Super Intelligences. Three members give opening statements, then each responds to the others. The Chair reviews the record, adopts one position and rates how far the Council agreed.
The SI Designation
In September 2026, speaking to the UN General Assembly, US President Donald Trump said artificial intelligence would be called "super intelligence", or SI, in all US government documents. The old name, he said, made the technology "sound fake".
The new name won a poll of his followers on Truth Social. The other candidates were superior intelligence, extreme intelligence and supreme intelligence.
The Directorate does not waste a runner-up. Every ruling of the Council is rated Extreme, Superior or Supreme Intelligence, depending on how far its members agree.
Researchers told the BBC the name is unlikely to stick, since superintelligence usually means a hypothetical system smarter than people at everything. The Council has noted the objection and continues to deliberate.
